Short answer: stay in Ha Long and go out on the bay. The cruise port is about 10 minutes from Ha Long City and the bay is right in front of you. Hanoi is 2.5 to 3 hours away each way, so on a normal call it means 5 to 6 hours in a vehicle.
Most ships in northern Vietnam call at Ha Long, and the bay gets busy. Ha Long expects around 150,000 cruise passengers in 2026. On days with two or three ships in port, the boats and caves are crowded. Going out early helps a lot.
A normal 7 to 8 hour call: the bay
The Ha Long Bay cruise from the port is the classic, about 7 hours port to port. A boat out between the limestone islands, Dog Rock and Dinh Huong islet, Thien Cung Cave (there are steps up to the entrance), and a look at a floating fishing village. If you only do one thing here, do this.
Seen the bay already? Ha Long town
The Ha Long heritage tour takes about 6 hours and stays on land:
- The fish market and the wharf, where the boats unload the morning catch. Loud, wet and a bit smelly, and a lot of fun.
- The Quang Ninh Museum, with over 10,000 objects about the region, including the coal mines. Note: the museum is closed on Mondays, so on a Monday we change the plan.
- Long Tien Pagoda, built in 1941 at the foot of Bai Tho Mountain.
- Hon Gai Church, the biggest church in the province, rebuilt after it was destroyed in 1972.
Two other ideas: the cable car and pagodas of Yen Tu Mountain, or a helicopter flight over the bay if your knees don't like cave steps.
10 hours or overnight: Hanoi
Hanoi is worth it only when your ship stays overnight, or for 10 hours or more. Our Hanoi day from Ha Long port takes about 10 hours. We pick you up at 7:30 and take the expressway. In Hanoi you see the Ho Chi Minh complex (the mausoleum from outside, his stilt house and the One Pillar Pagoda), Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake, the Temple of Literature, lunch, one museum of your choice, and a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter.
We will be straight with you: on a normal day call, many people who choose Hanoi tell us afterwards that they mostly remember the bus. If you can, do Hanoi and Ha Long over 2 days and 1 night instead.
Before you go ashore
- Bring some Vietnamese dong for small things. Not every shop takes cards.
- Wear shoes you can walk in. The caves have steps and can be slippery.
- Group tours like the heritage tour take a maximum of 15 people, and private tours are possible. We plan to have you back at the pier at least 60 minutes before all-aboard.
